Frequently Asked Questions
We know you have questions, it’s what every caring parent would do! Here are some detailed answers to put your mind at ease.
Is osteopathic treatment painful or uncomfortable for my baby?
Absolutely not. Pediatric osteopathy is renowned for its gentleness. The techniques we use are very subtle and soft, often involving a pressure lighter than the touch you’d use to check a ripe tomato. Most babies find the treatment incredibly relaxing. It’s very common for them to sleep soundly through the session or afterwards.
Why would a newborn need osteopathic care? Wasn't birth a natural process?
Birth is a beautiful and natural process, but it is also one of the most physically stressful events for both mother and baby. The incredible compression and forces involved as the baby moves through the birth canal can create subtle strains, particularly in the skull, neck, and jaw. These strains are common and often resolve on their own, but sometimes they need a little help. Gentle osteopathy can ease these strains, which may be contributing to issues like feeding difficulties, excessive crying, or head shape preferences.
My baby was born via C-section. Could they still benefit?
Yes, definitely. While a Caesarean delivery avoids the pressures of a vaginal birth, it presents its own unique challenges. Babies can experience sudden changes in pressure, possible strain from being manually lifted out, and even retained fluid in the lungs. This can sometimes lead to tension in the body. Osteopathic care can be wonderful for helping a C-section baby release this tension and support their transition to the world.
How long is a typical session, and what will happen during it?
A session typically lasts between 30 to 45 minutes. The majority of this time will be spent with your baby:
- We’ll Talk: First, we’ll sit down with you to discuss your pregnancy, birth story, and any specific concerns you have.
- We’ll Observe: We will then observe your baby, how they move, and their posture.
- We’ll Treat: With your baby comfortably on the treatment table (often on a soft blanket) or even in your arms, we will use our hands to gently assess and treat any areas of tension. We follow your baby’s lead throughout.
How many treatments will my baby need?
Every baby is unique, so the number of sessions varies. Some infants show remarkable improvement after just one or two sessions. Others, with more persistent patterns of tension, may benefit from a short series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart. We will always be transparent with you after our initial assessment and provide a recommended plan tailored to your baby’s specific needs.
What should my baby wear?
Comfort is key! Please dress your baby in loose, soft, and comfortable clothing that is easy to move in. We will likely need to gently move their arms and legs to assess mobility, so a simple onesie or comfortable outfit is perfect. We have a warm, cozy space for them.
